Well its Friday and I was planning to post some heavy content today, however; my current brain capacity will
not allow such an endeavor.
I am ready for the weekend.
Thinking back, campus life on the weekends was great. Knowing that most college students are strapped for cash, I thought I would put a list together of some cheap weekend activities.
Some of these are from personal experience and are in no particular order. Sorry you won't find toga parties or keggers here!
- Music Jams - some of the best memories I have were the jam sessions in our dorm. It wasn't uncommon for us to have an impromptu concert in our lounge. Music is a great way to get to know people and with most musicians - the more the merrier.
- Movie Night - my RA would host a regular movie night in his room. Great time to get together and watch some videos. (We didn't have DVDs back then)
- Sports - volleyball was a big thing when I was in school. We had a sand court in our courtyard and would play any chance we got. Get a team together and start challenging other dorms to a game.
- Dungeons and Dragons - I know, I know..... what can I say. If it's any consolation I never dressed up as my character! I will stand by it and say it is a great social game. So give it a try. Many hard core skeptics became our regular players.
- Video Games - having a Super Nintendo in our room (did I just date myself), Mario Kart, and Street Fighter tournaments were a daily occurrence! I can only imagine the good times had with Nintendo Wii tourneys!!
- Pot Lucks - some weekends a bunch of us would pool our resources, share the wealth and have some great dinners. Grab some food and some friends and go to town. How about making a video putting it on YouTube?
- Volunteer Projects - this subject deserves its own post. You do good, you feel good and it doesn't cost you anything!
- Capture the Flag in the Dorm Rooms - be warned your RA can bust you on this one. Be safe and this can be A LOT of fun!!
- Hall Fairs - every year each dorm was required to host a festival or fair of some sort. These were free to students. Check with your RA if this is something you can organize.
- Game Night - grab some cards and board games and have a blast!
- Frisbee Golf - all the rage on campuses. Get what you need at a used sports equipment store and unlike regular golf, it costs nothing to play 18 holes and you can pick up equipment for less that $20.
- Sport Events- our football team was nothing to brag about, but going to the game was always fun. Games were free to students in my time.
- Taking a Walk - college campuses are usually built around some terrific parks. Great excuse to get outside!!
- Benefits and Fundraisers - bowling and volleyball marathons were highlights of the year. Talk to your campus life office and find a list of organizations hosting benefits. Ask if they need help or how you can participate.
- Support Your School's Theater Department - I only went to one play and was in one play as well. Wish I had seen and done more. Most shows are free to students or will give major student discounts.
- Surfing the Internet - the Internet just cracked when I was in school. Though it is fun finding useless things on the web, use this time to do some quick employment scanning, building your network, or do some fun research on the topics that you are currently studying. I would have loved to have access to the information now available when I was in school.
- Dances - once a month our dorm would hold a dance in our lounge. Everyone had a blast dancing like idiots!
- Winter Sports - don't get cabin fever during the winter. Go sledding. Build a snowman. What about a snowball fight? What about a pick up co-ed snow bowl football game!!
- Hanging Out - sometimes not doing anything is the best. My last two years in the dorms, our floor would leave their doors open and people would wander from room to room to see what was happening. Just kicking back with your friends can be the best time spent.
- What can you add to this list?
Feel free to share your ideas!
