Is the US Dept. of Education still a lender?  Seems to me that I used to have loans with them (prior to consolidating with another lender).

aaaah, now that I've looked a bit closer, I think the US Dept of Education program is listed b/c I think it is more specifically called the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. That sounds familiar... the Direct Loan Program is administered by the US Dept. of Education, right?

Yes, you are both correct!  We also went back and forth on the name.  Since we are a neutral site, we felt it was appropriate to represent the direct lending program under its official name William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program.  Though most everyone refers to it as Direct loans! J

I don't think it works the same with lending from the Department of Education.  I think if your college uses their program, your loan is automatically "borrowed" from them and when you start paying the money back you p[ay the money directly to the Department.  I've also seen that loans form them are more expensive to pay back.
